Read Aloud Summit
National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2006 will be celebrated between 28 August
and 3 September. The week aims to reward and showcase the fine work school
communities are undertaking in improving literacy and/or numeracy outcomes of
their students and recognise the outstanding results that have been achieved.
There are a number of key national and state events that celebrate the week. One
of the key national events hosted by the Department of Education, Science and
Training is Australia’s Read Aloud Summit. The Summit will provide an
opportunity to focus on the importance of reading aloud to very young children
and the positive impact this has on both literacy and broader educational
outcomes. The Summit will highlight and encourage good practice and innovation
in Read Aloud Programmes designed for the years prior to school both nationally
and internationally.
The Tasmania Department of Education is providing an opportunity for two
teachers to attend the Read Aloud Summit held in Melbourne during August.
Accommodation, meals and teacher relief are included in this package. The two
teachers chosen to attend this event will be selected from a random draw.
All Tasmanian teachers K-10 (both government and non-government) are invited to
be part of this draw. To enter, teachers will need to download a form from
here [PDF 560KB]
The completed forms should be forwarded to the address below by 31 July, 2006.
There is a limit of one entry form per teacher. The draw will occur on 2 August,
2006 at the School Education Division. Winners will be contacted individually
and notification will be via Infostream.

This is one way of celebrating and thanking Tasmanian teachers for their crucial
role in improving literacy and/or numeracy standards of their students.
Good luck!
