Elements of the Original Program

The following key elements of literacy teaching and learning as expressed in the original Flying Start Guidelines will vary according to local interpretation:

·        A whole school approach to literacy teaching and learning;

·        Active parent involvement in student’s literacy learning;

·        Explicit literacy teaching;

·        At least 2 hours available for literacy teaching each day;

·        The use of effective literacy strategies;

·        Students matched to levelled texts for instructional purposes;

·        Individual assessment of students and records of progress; and

·        Regular weekly time available for literacy teachers to plan together.
