Cerita rakyat

Folk story traditions are found in all cultures.

Set up a display of folk stories from countries around the world for student free reading time. From this display, select some stories to read and discuss with students. Include some traditional stories from different parts of Indonesia as well as Aboriginal stories and stories that represent the cultural background of the students in the school.

Discuss the importance of storytelling traditions, both written and oral.  There are a number of literacy activities that students could do to explore particular stories:

  • pause before the end of a story and ask students to predict what they think will happen; share these and discuss; then read the real ending and discuss
  • work with a partner or small group to re-tell an Indonesian folk-story including some Indonesian words and phrases (as in the cicak and kancil example in Word or PDF)
  • oral or written retellings - where students read the story three or four times before attempting to retell it as closely to the original as possible, or act it out as close as possible to the original story
  • choose particular characters from an Indonesian folk story and write about them using the Indonesian language support shown in the Making connections section
  • the teacher writes some short descriptions of characters in Indonesian from any of the recently read folk tales; students listen to these and try to guess the character
  • compile a list Indonesian language that describes personal characteristics, eg berani (brave), lucu (funny) - then analyse the characters from particular folk stories
  • reflect on and discuss, story telling traditions (See the Reflection section).

Read some stories based on animal characters eg Aesop's fables, Brer Fox stories, Aboriginal dreamtime stories that feature particular animals. Discuss the format, setting, characteristics of the animals, 'moral' or purpose of the story.

In what ways are these type of folk stories from different cultures similar and in what ways are they different?
What things might tell you what cultures they were from if you didn't know?
