Making connections
Introducing ourselves by email or in a forum:
Have students consider how they would introduce
themselves to someone if they were meeting face to face. Is this
different from a written introduction? What language and cultural issues
might need to be considered if they are introducing themselves to
someone from another culture?
In groups, have students list the words / phrases they
want to use, and add the Indonesian. (See Online Resources section for useful online dictionaries). The
language list would include simple sentences giving age, name,
information about family, hobbies, school, likes and dislikes. Collate
students' ideas, correcting or expanding language as necessary, and
display as a class resource.
Share and display an Indonesian and Australian email
format with students. Have students write their introduction as an email, in
a secure forum or use a digital video camera to have students introduce
themselves via 'webcam'. You may consider using a digital camera for
students to add their own photo or a photo of something of particular
interest to them.
