Awareness raising
Talk to students about the idea of working
collaboratively over the web with students from another school in
Indonesia, or with Australian students learning Indonesian. Explain that
the purpose would be for students from Australia to learn more about
Indonesian culture, and students from Indonesia to learn more about
Australian culture.
Ask
students whether they think that students in Indonesia would have the
same access to computers and the Internet that they do. Then share a few
facts about Internet use in Indonesia (in Word
or PDF).
Explain how a collaborative
web project works - with agreed topics on which students contribute
ideas and information, comment on each other's work and build a shared
picture of their ideas on that topic. Tell students that in the work
they do, both sides will present about half their information in
Indonesian and half in English. That way they will both be improving
their language skills. There are many excellent
web sites that support teachers in understanding, initiating and
managing collaborative web projects. For example:
http://ozprojects.edna.edu.au An excellent site with advice on
managing web projects.
http://www.gsn.org/web/webproj/ A guide for teachers
in managing collaborative web projects.
