Bermain sepak takraw
Budi's project provides details about how to play the
amazing game of sepak takraw, with a diagram of the court (with clear
measurements) and web sites that explain the rules and player positions.
Sepak takraw balls are easy to borrow or buy, although the game could be
adapted to play with a foam ball if necessary. (See Resources section
for web sites on playing sepak takraw.)
Put students in teams of three (three players per
team) and revise the names of player positions. Teach some basic
language for playing games eg Your turn - Giliran kamu; the other
team's turn - giliran tim lain.
There are various language tasks that could be
prepared from Made's script. For example, you could work with students
to make a set of basic rules (using Made's script for support) and give them to students with missing
words or jumbled sentences or as a sequencing activity. Or choose key
words from Made's project and have students match to the English
equivalent.
Have players measure and mark out a court to scale on
(soft) grass. Instead of a proper net, if that is difficult, students
could take it in turns holding a long skipping rope to mark the top of
the net.
You could rotate players and audience, or play a round
of team competitions to decide the winner.
Discuss which other games are similar eg soccer and
volleyball, and what types of skills are needed to play sepak takraw
well.
You could explore some other traditional Indonesian
games (see Resources section) as a further extension.
