Awareness raising
The ability to find and access information effectively
is an important part of being a successful independent learner. Students
in Years 5 to 8 will probably have already used various search engines
to access the Internet, but may not realise that there are Indonesian
versions of many search engines, or that they can search for Indonesian
terms in their normal (English) search engines. They should also be
familiar with the benefits and limitations of other resources
such as online dictionaries and translation sites.
Ask students:
- How do you find information about particular
topics on the Internet?
- What search engines do you know and use?
(See the Online Resources
section for a list of some search engines.)
- Have you ever searched for Indonesian terms or
information?
- What kinds of sites did you use? (This may
include online dictionaries or translation sites, online newspapers
such as Kompas etcetera.)
Ask students whether they think
that students in Indonesia would have the same access to computers and
the Internet that they do. Then share a few facts about Internet
use in Indonesia (in
Word or
PDF).
Activity:
Explain to
students that they are going to explore some Internet sites useful for
Indonesian. You will need
access to computers and the Internet.
If possible, have students work in pairs at a computer
to work through the
Indonesian Internet resource sheet (in
Word or
PDF)
to briefly explore some of the available Indonesian resources. If
there is only one computer, use a data show to present the websites to
students as a whole group. Discuss school rules
for internet use with students before they begin.
Briefly discuss students' answers and conclusions
about the different resources. Ask:
- How do you know whether a site is reputable or
not?
- Are you allowed to simply copy pictures and
text from other sites and use them in your own?
These important considerations are best discussed
fully in ICT class time, but basically:
- If a site is '.edu' or '.org' it is probably more
reliable than '.com' sites. Students should realise that anyone can
publish to the Internet and that there is no guarantee that
information will be correct, therefore it is a good idea to double
check facts.
- There are two issues around copying and using other
people's information or images from the web - plagiarism and
copyright.
Students are allowed to copy and use images and information from the
web for educational purposes (not web publication), without
applying for copyright permission. But they should always cite the
source of the image or information, identify any direct quotes from
someone else's writing, and try to use their own words rather than
simply copying.
NB: The two different Indonesian language versions
in Google (mentioned in the Indonesian Internet resources sheet) are
Javanese and Sundanese.
