Ke-an
nouns
The information in Pintu Indonesia about the Garuda, offer an
opportunity to introduce abstract nouns. Most nouns are concrete - they
can be detected by your five senses. But abstract nouns cannot be
detected by your senses, they are ideas or concepts, such as friendship,
bravery, curiousity, patriotism.
Introduce the concept of abstract nouns in English and ask students to
suggest some examples. Explain that in Indonesian abstract nouns are
created by adding the 'ke-' prefix in front of the base word and '-an'
suffix after it. Knowing the meaning of the base word, it is easy to
predict the meaning of the ke-an noun.
Give students the Ke-an nouns sheet (in
Word or
PDF) and have them
work through the sheet with a partner, using Pintu Indonesia and
Indonesian dictionaries as resources. Discuss students' work and collate
a class list of abstract nouns that can be displayed to support students
and added to in the future.
