Some guidelines for using learning objects in the classroom

Whether you want your students to work online, directly from your school Intranet, or from an individual computer, learning objects can be key elements of your classroom program.

Learning objects can be used to:

  • introduce a new concept or idea

  • give students practice with something they are learning

  • give students a new experience of a familiar idea

  • pose problems for students to solve

  • provide a backup resource

  • give students practice at something they are having difficulty with

  • provide students with a variety of experiences in a learning sequence

  • assess student knowledge and / or understanding

Irrespective of how learning objects are used, it is important that you:

  • are familiar with the object
  • plan for its use
  • make it easily accessible for students.

Some key questions about learning purpose

Some key questions to ask yourself when planning to use a learning object are:

“What is the value of this learning object in the educational program of the student/s?”

"How will this develop the students' understanding?"

"In what ways will this lead to improved student learning outcomes?"

If the learning object will provide a better learning experience for at least one student then plan for and use the learning object. Be prepared to use a mixture of offline and online learning activities, to cater for different learning styles and different learning needs.
