Menurut pendapat saya: In my opinion

This learning object is looking at the different points of view and needs of people in Indonesia about land use and the saving of the orangutan.

Tell students that they are going to choose the role of one of the four people interviewed in Penyelamatan binatang (the Batak farmer, the businessman, the park ranger and the environmentalist) and write a short persuasive piece stating that person's opinion about these issues.

NB: This is an ideal opportunity for the Indonesian teacher to collaborate with the English teacher to introduce point of view and persuasive writing to students - in both subject areas.

Briefly discuss the key features of persuasive opinion writing:

  • strong language

  • appealing to the emotions of the listeners

  • repetition of your main points

  • simple 'slogans' to get your message across

Remind students that they can use the answers that character gives in the interview to help them. You may choose to give them that section of the script (in Word or PDF).

You may also like to present a model of this writing, identifying and discussing the features listed above. See Menurut Petani Batak (in Word or PDF).
