Effective assessment takes place at several stages in a learning sequence and informs the teaching and learning process. Dr Lorna Earl (http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/depts/tps/learl/) suggests that assessment can be thought of as:

  • Assessment as learning - formative assessment where students self or peer assess their work, reflecting on themselves as learners as well as on the quality of their work

  • Assessment for learning - formative assessment where the teacher assesses students work and learning and provides feedback to inform and improve the teaching and learning

  • Assessment of learning - summative assessment where the teacher assesses the students' work and learning in order to provide a final assessment.

More information about this approach to assessment can be found at http://www.ltag.education.tas.gov.au/assessment/practice/task_design.htm#
