Effective assessment takes place at
several stages in a learning sequence and informs the teaching and
learning process. Dr Lorna Earl (http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/depts/tps/learl/)
suggests that assessment can be thought of as:
-
Assessment
as learning - formative assessment where students self or peer
assess their work, reflecting on themselves as learners as well as on the
quality of their work
-
Assessment
for learning - formative assessment where the teacher assesses
students work and learning and provides feedback to inform and improve the
teaching and learning
-
Assessment of learning - summative assessment where the teacher
assesses the students' work and learning in order to provide a final
assessment.
