Assessment

Throughout this series of Teacher Resources, examples of assessment as, for and of learning are included as appropriate. See Effective assessment for an explanation of these assessment terms.

Assessment of proficiency in Indonesian can be made through measuring student performance on a number of assessment tasks, and against the Key Performance Measures for Indonesian.

Task 1: Sequencing a bargaining conversation
Task 2: Role playing bargaining situations
Assessment against the Key Performance Measures

Task 1: Sequencing a bargaining conversation

Have students work independently (or with a partner if they are not confident) to sequence conversation snippets (Sequence 1 Word or PDF; Sequence 2 Word or PDF) to make a sensible bargaining conversation. View a possible answer (Word or PDF).

If students need further practise on sequencing, extra tasks can easily be created from the bargaining scripts in the Resources section.

Assessment for learning: Have students explain their sequence to you and assess how well students can:

  • summarise the content of the bargaining conversation
  • accurately sequence the conversation
  • explain the strategies they used to decide on the correct sequence.

Provide feedback to students.

Task 2: Role playing bargaining situations

Have students work in pairs or threes to script a bargaining role play. Each student must contribute to the planning and speak several times in the role play. If some students lack confidence about speaking without notes, they can ask a third student to act the part of an 'Indonesian friend' and prompt them if needed.

All assessment is done against a set of criteria. This assessment form  should be given to students so they know what they have to do to be successful. (Word or PDF).

Assessment as learning:
Explain that each group should self-assess against the criteria. They then rehearse their role play with another group of students and peer-assess each other, offering feedback about how to improve their role plays.

Assessment of learning: Teacher assessment of final role plays against the criteria.

Achievement in Indonesian proficiency can be measured against the Key Performance Measures for Indonesian Yr 6/7 (Word or PDF), or against Indonesian outcomes in your State and Territory curriculum.
