Creating your own digital magazine in Indonesian

This activity is much more worthwhile if it is done for an authentic purpose, such as:

  • the creation of a digital magazine to introduce young people in Indonesia to youth culture in Australia, or to the delights of visiting your region of Australia, or to advertise Australia as a place to come on youth exchange or for future study

  • providing a forum where Australian students of Indonesian in several schools can collaborate to produce an online magazine to showcase their work.

It also offers excellent opportunities to be done collaboratively between several schools, and as a transdisciplinary task involving input from the English, Arts and Technology learning areas.

Brief outline:

  • With students, identify the sections you want to have in your magazine and what skills would be needed to put those sections together
  • List the jobs or roles within a publishing company and allocate these to pairs or groups of students. For example, editor, advertising department, design and layout, feature article writers. Consider inviting someone from the local publishing or multimedia industry to offer advice or introduce students to the various roles.

Work with students to establish clear publication and quality assurance processes.
