Advertisements
Kesan! features only one advertisement (for
mobile phones) but visit any online magazine and newspaper and you will
see many advertisements, often using particular techniques to try to
attract the attention of the reader.
Have students explore the online newspaper and
magazine sites (see Resources section) and offline magazines if
available, to make an advertisement collection or 'gallery'. Consider:
What types of products are most often advertised?
What language is used in advertisements? Collect
key words / persuasive techniques.
What techniques do online advertisers use to
attract attention for their products? How do these compare with
advertisements in a traditional paper-based medium?
What effect does advertising have on young
people?
Many of the products being advertised are
well-known brands. What does this mean?
In what ways might global companies influence and
change personal and national identity and culture in different
countries?
Offline: Cut out pictures of a range of
products from magazines and have students create an advertisement for
that product in Indonesian, using persuasive techniques and appropriate
language.
Online: Where students can gain support to do
so, have them create an animated advertisement or web-advertisement,
once again using persuasive techniques and appropriate language.
Display students' advertisements and discuss which are
most successful and why.
Assessment for learning:
Considering students advertisements and their
discussion, assess the extent to which students:
- identify persuasive advertising techniques
- apply these to the creation of an Indonesian
advertisement
- use appropriate Indonesian with correct spelling
- explain clearly their ideas on the effect of
advertising on personal identity.
Provide feedback for students.
