Making connections
Comparing cultural settings:
Divide the class into pairs and give each pair a
picture of one of the settings from Kata-kata dasar:
Explain to students that these
scenes are from the learning object that they will be using, and that
they represent scenes from Indonesia. Ask students to look really
closely at the pictures and try to identify the similarities and
differences between this setting in Indonesia and the same setting in
Australia.
Underneath each picture is a
Venn diagram of two overlapping circles. Ask students to list their
ideas in the appropriate sections. You might also ask students to use
the space under the Venn diagram, or the back of the sheet, to write
down as many Indonesian words as possible that they think would describe
that picture.
When students have finished,
group all the pairs doing a particular picture together and ask them to
share and discuss their ideas to form an agreed set of similarities and
differences. Share with the class and discuss.
Language:
Enlarge each picture to A3 size,
or make an overhead transparency and project onto a whiteboard. Then
using students vocabulary suggestions, label parts of the picture. You
may want to write / say short sentences rather than single words. Eg
Ini pedagang kaki lima. Ini bemo yang berwarna hijau.
You may also ask students simple
questions about the enlarged pictures. For example:
Di mana bemo?
Di mana anak perempuan? Apa warna tas sekolahnya?
Berapa murid di gambar ini?
Leave the labelled diagrams on
display to support students in using the learning object.
