Extension activities
Taking it
further: PeN- prefixes
Ask students to list the MeN- prefixes and write them
in a column on the board. Explain to students that there are PeN-
prefixes that work in the same way. PeN- prefix plus the base word forms
a noun (kata benda) meaning the person or thing performing that action.
Next to each MeN- prefix, ask students to suggest the
matching PeN- prefix and write those on the board as well.
Take students through some examples from verbs used in
Kata-kata dasar. For example:
- menjual = to sell, penjual = the seller
- membuat = to do or make, pembuat = the maker,
producer
- menggali = to dig, penggali = the digger, excavator
Have students work in small groups to complete the
PeN-prefix worksheet (in
Word or PDF).
Provide each group with at least one kamus so that they can check the
meanings of the PeN- words. All the verbs on this sheet have been used in
Kata-kata dasar, so students should be familiar with them.
Similar worksheets could be created based on new MeN-
verbs from the list of additional verbs (in
Word or
PDF).
There are other prefixes and suffixes which students
may come across as they use the kamus, for example ke-an, -an,
ter-. You may choose to look at these as extension activities as
well.
Kamus challenge:
Have students in groups of about four. Each group needs at least one
or two Indonesian dictionaries (kamus). Students also need access to the
rule chart (aturan) – either displayed on the class wall or as a
reference sheet (in Word
or PDF).
From the list of additional verbs (in
Word or
PDF), write one
MeN-verb on the board or on a card which you hold up. Teams must quickly
write down the base word and the meaning from the kamus.
Teams score one point for each correct base word and
meaning. Bonus points could be awarded for pronouncing the word
correctly and / or using the word in a sentence (practising simple
'subject...verb...object' construction.)
