Awareness raising
Write some related words in English on the whiteboard.
For example: earthling, unearth, earthed, earthenware, earthquake,
earthwork, earthworm, earthly Or noticed, noticeable, noticing,
noticeboard, noticeably, notices.
Ask
students what they notice about that list of words - basically they all
come from the one base word. Share with students the process of looking
up some of those words in an English dictionary (photocopy the page if
you don't have a class set of dictionaries). It will become apparent
that the meaning of some words that are built from a base word is
'hidden' inside the entry for that base word. Model how you must scan
through the entry until you come to the word you are looking for.
Explain to students that this happens in Indonesian as
well - but with some added little quirks that sometimes make it
harder to recognise the base word and find the meaning in the
dictionary.
Tell students that they are going to be using a
learning object that will teach them how to recognise verb base words and use
a bi-lingual dictionary, and that they should have lots of fun as well.
This introduction to verbs (in
Word or
PDF) offers a
simple explanation of types of verbs in Bahasa Indonesia.
