Reflection and feedback
Once all students have
completed exploration of the learning object, bring them back
together as a group to de-brief.
Review the three
scenarios presented in the learning object:
-
Ali's predicament was
around a new friendship and a religious 'taboo' - with the fear of
a lack of cross-cultural understanding and tolerance;
-
Lastri's predicament was
a possible clash with parental values or control as she was
beginning to grow up and want to spend time with particular boys;
-
Nyoman's predicament was
around the conflicting requirements of a job and a team sport -
both of which he valued.
Discuss each of these
predicaments, considering questions such as:
-
What language was used in describing the
predicaments?
-
Could this predicament
happen in Australia too? (Draw out examples of a variety of religious
(or other social) groups, including Moslems - where particular restrictions or rules
of behaviour are required)
-
Do people face
predicaments at any time of their life, or is it particularly in
their early teens? Why or why not? (Look at the movement from
childhood to adulthood, during which time people are working out
their own personal identity, moving away from the control of their
families)
-
In what ways does the
culture someone grows up in influence the type of predicaments
they face or how they handle them? (You could include different
religious codes, different traditions and how strictly they are
applied etc)
-
Are there common cultural
values shared by everyone in a country, and / or are there
different sub-cultures? Give examples within Australia and / or
Indonesia.
-
In what ways does a
culture change over time? Think about both Indonesia and
Australia. (Global popular culture is important here, with many
Asian countries finding that young people are influenced by
movies, television etc and are moving away from traditional ways
and traditional values).
Have students
individually reflect (in writing or recorded oral reflection) on
what they have learnt from their work on Itu masalah,
considering the questions below.
Assess the extent to
which students can explain their understandings, using the rubric
provided (in Word
or PDF) to
assess the understanding goals listed in the
Assessment section:
How would you decide what
to do if you were faced with a predicament? (Understanding goal 1)
In what ways are
predicaments faced by young people in Indonesia and Australia
similar and in what ways might they be different? (Understanding
goal 2)
In what ways does a person's
culture influence the way they think and behave? (Understanding
goal 3)
