Introducing the learning
object
Introduce the learning object to the whole class
together. One effective way of supporting students who are less
experienced in Indonesian is to use a data show or projector to take
students through one character's predicament from start to
finish, modelling the following:
- how to infer meaning from the context, words they
know and words with English help. Explain to students that they are
not meant to know every word, but rather to use their literacy skills
to make an educated guess
- accessing extra information presented in English
through the information button at different points in the learning
object
- how to navigate through the learning object
- understanding when the focus in the learning object
shifts (from nature of the predicament; to the advice given; to
what might happen from following that advice; to what the Australian
students might do if that was their problem - and why; to
finding out what the Indonesian character actually did)
- how to enter text where required. NB Students may
enter text in English or Indonesian as appropriate. You may wish to
direct more capable students to use Indonesian.
- where the 'Contoh' examples may be helpful
- how to print out their work.

Allocating the
predicaments
Have students work in pairs or groups of three to
explore the other characters in the learning object. You may allow
students to choose which character to investigate, or you may allocate
the characters to alternate groups.
Provide each group with the appropriate character
review sheet and allow them to fill it in as a group or individually, as
you prefer:
Masalah Ali (in
Word or
PDF)
Masalah Lastri (in
Word or
PDF)
Masalah Nyoman (in
Word or
PDF)
If groups finish looking at one character, assess
their work on that sheet and their printed work from the learning object
and provide feedback. (Assessment for learning - see
Assessment section)
If time permits, allow groups to explore another
character's predicament.
