| Playing 'memory'
or concentration games:
Have students draw pictures of geckos
(or any other agreed objects that they can describe) on cards, or
glue geckos from the gecko sets onto separate cards. For each
drawing, have them write a description or dot points of
characteristics onto another card. Shuffle all the cards and deal
them face down. Take it in turns to find pairs.
Exploring Australian animals
similar to geckos
Have students suggest Australian
animals that are similar to geckos such as lizards, goannas, frogs...
Have students explain why they think these are similar eg look,
habits, classification type. Are there any fables about these
animals, that explain their place or relationship to our society?
Why are such stories written?
Have students work in small groups to
write a short play in a mix of English and Indonesian (similar to
Kancil and Cicak) to explain the characteristics of an Australian
animal - why it is like it is or why it behaves the way it
does. You may wish to suggest some traditional stories to support
students.
Have students perform their play as a
radio play, puppet play or shadow puppet play for others to enjoy.
You could have students generate a list of criteria for success in
this task, and then self - and peer - assess against those criteria
or with a rubric.
