Project background
This project was developed with funding from the collaborative projects
element of the National Asian Languages and Studies in Australian Schools
(NALSAS) Strategy, which was a cooperative initiative of the Commonwealth,
State and Territory Governments.
For more information on NALSAS, visit the
NALSAS
website.
The project draws on current directions, research and emerging approaches
to effective languages education, in particular relevant research and
initiatives related to intercultural language learning (ILL).
You can view the
ILL Report
in PDF format (2.39MB) on the NALSAS website.
The purpose of the NALSAS Indonesian Project
The purpose of the NALSAS Indonesian Project
is to produce online resources that will support students in Grades 5 to 8
to develop and practise Indonesian language skills in an interactive
environment.
Many of the learning objects sit within an overarching
framework around the exploration of identity, a key concept in intercultural language learning.
This overarching concept is expressed from the personal to the global:
-
Me (Australian / Indonesian students
as unique individuals – The Self)
-
My community (how we, as Australians and
Indonesians, live – The Local)
-
My world
(how we, as Australians and
Indonesians, fit within the global context – The World).
Some learning objects support students in
using higher-order thinking in a transdisciplinary inquiry, or focus
strongly on particular aspects of Indonesian language, allowing students
to explore and reflect on language structure and function.
