Awareness raising
Present students with a scenario such as Your
nephew / niece is having a birthday and you don't know what to choose as
a gift. Ask students to help you by brainstorming some suggestions. Discuss the
process of gift-giving as a personal and cultural activity, considering
questions such as:
- What language is associated with giving gifts?
- How do you know whether or not you should give a
gift?
- How do you know what would be an appropriate
gift?
- Are gifts you buy better than gifts you make?
Why or why not?
- Do you think that all families in our community
would have the same ideas about gift-giving? Why or why not?
- How do you know how much money is appropriate to
spend on a gift?
- What effect does it have if someone gives you an
inappropriate gift?
- What kinds of gifts are inappropriate? Is this
the same for everyone or not?
- If you don't like the gift that someone gives
you, is it alright to exchange it or get rid of it?
Have students work in small groups to brainstorm all
the occasions that they can think of where someone would normally expect
to either give or receive a gift in our society.
In their learning journals, ask students to:
- create a concept map around gift-giving in
Australia, using only one colour. Software such as Inspiration
enables them to do this on computer. You can download a free 30 day
trial at
http://www.inspiration.com/home.cfm .
- reflect and summarise their own family customs or
traditions of gift-giving.
