English Major Negotiated Task
This
package, developed by teachers at Hobart College, includes information
for students about the major negotiated task, pro-formas for students
to submit proposals for both types of task, and a review pro-forma
to help students evaluate their work.
You
have a choice between a team Communication Project and
an individual Negotiated Study. Each task requires about
15 hours of class time plus an appropriate amount of homework
time. You are encouraged to access information outside the school
or college and to make connections with the wider community.
A
Communication Project
The Communication Project is a task that involves a
team of students working together to create a product that
has a clear audience and purpose. Your team will decide on a project

A
Negotiated Study
This is an individual task. It allows you to identify
an area of the course you would particularly like to explore further.
For example, if you want to study a pre-tertiary English subject
in the future, choose a detailed novel or film study. Alternatively,
you could research an area of interest and present information
in a variety of ways or explore future employment and present
your findings in a new form. You also need to include a spoken
component.
For
example, you could choose one of the following areas of study:
-
A
novel plot profile, review, character study, book
to film ideas.
-
Poetry
- create an anthology including some of your own poems,
or study two or three poems in depth. Make a tape to go
with your anthology.
-
A
film - write a review of the film, do some character studies,
discuss the techniques used in the film using clips, interview
the actor or director on radio

An

radio, write reviews of books
-
A
director - write a biography, interview the author on radio,
review their films, discuss typical techniques using film
clips
-
Create
a short story or picture book after reading and studying
many examples
-
A
media study choose a media type and study it critically
eg TV soaps or drama, TV news
-
A
theme study choose a theme such as identity and investigate
how that theme is presented in film, TV, magazines, literature
