Exploring poetry through film
This
activity is designed to enable students who have some understanding
of film-technique to use this to develop and share interpretations
of poetry. The activity was designed by Lynne Collidge for her
English 12C students at Hobart College, but it could be used for
a wide range of ages with some modifications.
Instructions
for students
Work
in a group of three or four for this activity.
- You
have been asked to prepare a film clip that will be shown
during the reading of a poem. You will need your sheets on
film technique to decide factors such as camera shots, framing,
sequencing, editing, décor and design (costuming, sets,
props), special effects and so on. (Similar information can
be found in the Glossary of Film Terms
- Select
one of the following poems (one poem per group):
- Digging

- North
Light by John Tranter
- First
Party at Ken Keseys with Hells Angels by Alan
Ginsberg
- Housework
by Margaret Scott
- Little
Red Riding Hood by Ania Walwicz
- Cinderella
by Anne Sexton.

In your group, read the poem and briefly discuss its meaning.
- Prepare
your script using a variety of film techniques such as close-up,
panning, tracking, flashback, slow motion and so on to explore
the characters, events, images and symbols portrayed in the
poem.
- Present
your script to the class, either in visual format or as an
oral presentation.
Assessment
The
English 12C criteria to be assessed are:
- Communicate
ideas and information effectively in speech in a variety of
contexts.
- Interpret
and analyse themes, contexts and values in a variety of texts.
- Analyse
and discuss ways in which form and style are used by writers
directors for specific purposes and audiences.
- Work
productively in groups, planning and organising to achieve
specific objectives.
