Teaching Ideas and Units - Beaut Ideas

Exploring poetry through film

This activity is designed to enable students who have some understanding of film-technique to use this to develop and share interpretations of poetry. The activity was designed by Lynne Collidge for her English 12C students at Hobart College, but it could be used for a wide range of ages with some modifications.

Instructions for students

Work in a group of three or four for this activity.

  1. You have been asked to prepare a film clip that will be shown during the reading of a poem. You will need your sheets on film technique to decide factors such as camera shots, framing, sequencing, editing, décor and design (costuming, sets, props), special effects and so on. (Similar information can be found in the Glossary of Film Terms
  2. Select one of the following poems (one poem per group):
    • ‘Digging’ by Seamus Heaney
    • ‘Midsummer Ice’ by Les Murray
    • ‘Night of the Scorpion" by Nizzim Ezekiel
    • ‘North Light’ by John Tranter
    • ‘First Party at Ken Keseys with Hell’s Angels’ by Alan Ginsberg
    • ‘Housework’ by Margaret Scott
    • ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ by Ania Walwicz
    • ‘Cinderella’ by Anne Sexton.
  1. In your group, read the poem and briefly discuss its meaning.
  2. Prepare your script using a variety of film techniques such as close-up, panning, tracking, flashback, slow motion and so on to explore the characters, events, images and symbols portrayed in the poem.
  3. Present your script to the class, either in visual format or as an oral presentation.

Assessment

The English 12C criteria to be assessed are:

  1. Communicate ideas and information effectively in speech in a variety of contexts.
  2. Interpret and analyse themes, contexts and values in a variety of texts.
  3. Analyse and discuss ways in which form and style are used by writers directors for specific purposes and audiences.
  4. Work productively in groups, planning and organising to achieve specific objectives.
