Investing in Our Schools Programme
A Commonwealth Government Initiative

Overview and guidelines

The Commonwealth Government’s Investing In Our Schools Programme (IOSP) aims to provide school communities with funding to enable them to undertake a wide range of infrastructure and equipment projects. Examples of the funding that may be requested for small scale projects include:

  • classroom improvements
  • library resources or services and goods for cataloguing a library
  • computer or ICT facilities or equipment
  • air conditioning and heating
  • shade structures
  • playing fields
  • sporting infrastructure
  • play equipment
  • music facilities and instruments
  • furniture
  • floor coverings
  • security measures
  • amenity refurbishments
  • small scale extensions or refurbishment of buildings.

The program runs over four years from 2005 to 2008 and provides funding up to $150,000 to government school communities for eligible projects.

Details of the program, including guidelines, are available through the DEST website.

2005

Applications for 2005 are now closed.

A total of 236 applications were received from Tasmanian Government schools for Round 1 funding (up to $50,000). An additional 102 applications were received for Round 2 funding (up to $150,000).

Successful Round 1 projects for Tasmanian Government schools have been announced. Outcomes for 2005 Round 2 are expected to be announced from late 2005 to early 2006.

In Tasmania, 116 projects received Round 1 funding of $3,656,581.00 for projects with a total project cost of $4,025,546.00.

2006

In 2006 there will only be one funding round per State and Territory. Government school communities will be able to apply for projects of any size up to the $150,000 overall limit. The 2006 online application form is expected to be available early in 2006.

The closing date for applications for the 2006 funding round for Tasmanian Government schools is 31 May 2006.

Local Government Requirements

A condition of funding under the Investing In Our Schools Programme is that projects comply with relevant local planning guidelines and appropriate building or equipment standards.

It is possible that planning applications and the requirement for building and/or plumbing approvals may apply to some projects. Should this be the case, it is important to remember that all planning/development applications must first be submitted for signing by the Minister for Education. Contact with Facility Services is recommended in these instances.

Schools are advised to contact local councils to discuss their project with them.  It is not sufficient to rely solely on the advice of suppliers or contractors in regard to compliance matters.
