The repair or replacement of hot water cylinders and instant water heating units is a site responsibility.

Hot water that is accessible to younger children should be temperature limited to prevent scalding.  The preferred method is by using thermostatic mixing or tempering valves that combine hot and cold water to deliver water to the tap at a safe temperature.  A similar result can be achieved by turning down the hot water temperature, however the resulting temperature is less controlled and there is a health risk associated with water being retained in the cylinder and pipes at relatively low temperatures for an extended period of time.

The performance of the valves should be checked at least annually by running the water for long enough for it to reach maximum temperature.

Hot water cylinders are fitted with a pressure relief valves that prevents dangerous pressures developing in the cylinder and rupturing the cylinder or spurting out when a tap is turned on.  These valves should be opened at least once a year.  There is generally a small handle at the top of the cylinder that can be lifted to release some water or arrange for your plumber to do so whenever at the school. Once a year at a minimum.

Hot water cylinders are generally mounted in trays that drain to the outside or other convenient drainage point.  The are critical in preventing water damage and potentially scalding should the cylinder leak and should be checked periodically.
