Dept. of Education > Administrative and Management services > Finance, Facilities and Business Strategy Branch > Facility Management > Managing Asbestos Managing AsbestosIntroductionSchools have an obligation to inform trades people and others working in the building that there is an asbestos register and to make it available before any works commence. These guidelines have been prepared to assist Tasmanian schools and libraries to effectively manage any risk that may be associated with asbestos being on a school or library site. Asbestos need not pose a risk to the building occupants if it is in a stable condition and is not disturbed by building works or other activities. Asbestos RegisterThe Department of Education has undertaken an audit of all sites that it owns and has provided an asbestos register for each site. The audit did not cover leased sites as they are the responsibility of the building owner. The asbestos register is an important document and should be kept in the front office and be made available to anyone undertaking works or maintenance on the site to ensure that asbestos is not inadvertently disturbed. The site management and senior staff should be aware of the register and its contents. Management of AsbestosIt is not uncommon for asbestos to be found in floor tiles and cement wall sheeting in buildings constructed before 1984. These are generally quite stable and pose no risk to the occupants if they are not disturbed. Higher risk asbestos will be identified in the asset register. Access to any areas containing high risk asbestos should be strictly controlled and the material should be removed. Advice on the management of low risk asbestos can be found on the Workplace Standards Authority website Asbestos Information - Workcover Removal of AsbestosAsbestos should only be removed by contractors registered by the Workplace Standards Authority. A list can be found on Asbestos contractors Further information on the removal of asbestos can be found on the NOHSC website. Funding for Removal of AsbestosFunding for the removal of asbestos should be allowed for within the school or library maintenance allocation, unless it constitutes a minor or major work for which funding can be sought through the appropriate Branch Works Committee. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Executive Officer (Accommodation) on (03) 6233 7223 or the Help Desk on 1800 816 057.
