Teaching
Ideas and Units - Beaut Ideas
Using Word Ladders for Poetry
This
activity was contributed by Ross Belbin of Wilmot Primary School.
Word Ladders can be very useful to develop vocabulary and poetic technique.
Here is a process that has worked well:
- Children
sit in a circle and pass a focus object around.
- They volunteer
an adjective or phrase to describe the object.
- The teacher
writes the responses down on strips of card.
- Once the
object has circled the group two or three times responses will wane.
Children can say "pass" if their adjectives have already been
suggested.
- The teacher
then models the arrangement of the strips into a poem or group of poems.
- Over the
next few hours or days, children can use the strips to make their own
poems. This can be done individually, with a partner or small group.
