Advice
Beginning
teachers and teachers new to the school need special support from the
English co-ordinator. Experienced teachers from learning areas other than
English also require ongoing help as they come to terms with the requirements
of teaching outside their area of expertise. There are many ways to support
new teachers:
- Encourage
them to visit the school before they begin work.
- Provide
them with a package of materials that includes as much information as
possible about English teaching at the school. These could include:
- syllabus
or course documents
- examples
of student work
- course
outlines
- Department
policies (or a summary)
- class
list(s)
- lists
of available resources
- Provide
them with information about students. Have available student records
of development and arrange time for new teachers to discuss their students
with staff who have taught the class(es) previously.
- Explain
the supportive school environment programs that are in place, particularly
those related to discipline matters.
- Provide
a copy of the staff list. In secondary schools, identify those who teach
in the English learning area. In primary schools, identify the teacher
of each class.
- In secondary
schools, ensure that new teachers are in the staff rooms with other
English teachers.
- Offer
professional mentoring as required.
- Explain
school routines.
- Maintain
regular, daily contact with them, especially in the first few weeks.
- Encourage
them to explore the information and ideas in Especially
for Teachers.

More Support
Encourage
new teachers to join a professional association - TATE
and/or ALEA.
They will find the workshops, conferences and professional contacts offered
by these associations to be invaluable. If you feel a beginning teacher
could benefit from an on line mentoring program, contact the PCO through
Enquiries on line.
