The
Asia Education Foundation (AEF)
promotes and supports the studies of Asia in Australian schools by
providing a range of curriculum resources and services to assist students
and teachers
to build knowledge and understandings about Asia. Resources for use in
English classrooms have been developed with a focus on the contemporary;
they use authentic sources and voices to connect with existing English
curriculum themes and provide engaging and challenging teaching strategies.
Resources are available for both primary and secondary students as well
as additional online support.

Film Asia

Winner of the 2002 Australian Award for

Book, Film Asia is a cutting-edge
resource for secondary English classrooms. 15 Asian films have been selected
to support teachers to use film from Asia.
Voices and Visions: Texts for the
Senior English Classroom

CD ROM: Indonesia, China, Japan and India
(forthcoming). All CD ROMs have been distributed free of charge to all
secondary schools and colleges. Award winning and ground breaking! The Voices
and Visions CD ROMs are a series
of high quality texts developed for the senior English classroom. Each
CD ROM includes a variety of texts from the source country organised around
the Literature, Film and Television, Popular Publishing and Visual and
Performing Arts genres.

Anthologies from Asia

This series of three texts are supported
by extensive teaching notes. Impressions (for Lower Secondary Classrooms) draws students into
the cultures and life experiences of peoples across Asia. Reflections (for
Middle Secondary Classrooms) challenges students’ views
of the world by providing them with access to the varied experiences
of peoples in Asia. Dimensions (for Senior Secondary
Classrooms) probes deep into the human experience and stretches
the boundaries of students’ knowledge.

Hanabi, Sources from Japan for the
Secondary English Classroom

This text brings to life the experiences
of teenagers in Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, Nepal and Australia
through poems, letters and short stories. It is an excellent text for introducing
students in lower secondary classrooms to other ways of seeing the world.

This text includes poetry, short stories,
essays and extracts from novels to focus on issues of identity, lifestyle
choices and struggles for freedom. It is an accessible, high quality anthology
of contemporary Asian and Australian writing and was developed for middle
to upper secondary students.
Asia at a Glance: English Curriculum
Units

These
units are designed for use with the Asia at a Glance CD ROM.
Written in a style to appeal directly to students,
the units draw on a collection of texts set in and around China,
Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand
and Vietnam. Texts
related to each country are represented by three vignettes
of ‘slices of
life’ in a variety of forms including stories, poetry, journalism,
plays, satire, letters, monologues, dreams, email and journals.
